Forensics

Litter leaves a forensic trail . Little plastic seal-able bags show cannabis use , Condom wrappers may show hope over accomplishment. Dog walkers drop sweet wrappers and mark out their favourite walk. Crisp and sweet wrappers show a children's picnic. As you pick you observe the lives of others.

The 80 20 rule

I can understand why some people don't collect litter despite finding it an annoyance. It is so widespread that once they start they fear they will never be able to stop. The answer is to set limits . I only clear some well defined areas that I use daily, my street and the area I walk my dog. Even within those I will only clear the 20% of litter that is most visible but makes an 80% difference when dealt with.

Not all litter droppers are the same I believe. Most just don't care and drop where they stand.
Some feel a little guilty and shove it under a bush out of plain view. Some carefully place it on a post or wall for all to see. Others smash glass and make things as dangerous as possible.
I wonder if these reveal about a persons outlook on life.

When you pick litter its important to be seen to pick litter. Picking litter discretely only temporary removes an eyesore. Letting others see you pick might just change one or two attitudes and begins to address the problem of indifference.

Picking litter

I pick up litter once a week from a local common while walking my dog.
